  • An important paper on the philosophy of time written in 1908 by John McTaggart Ellis McTaggart. In "The Unreality of Time," McTaggart acknowledged that events seem to be ordered in time and that time's passage can be understood in terms of events moving from the future to the present to the past. He then set out to demonstrate the unreality of time by discussing two conceptions of time: 1) one where events find their ordering in time in virtue of instantiating different temporal properties at different times and, 2) one where events bear an unchanging (static) temporal relation to all other events (e.g. if event A is earlier than event B at any time, it will be earlier than B at all other times as well). McTaggart set out to demonstrate in this paper that time is an illusion by first showing how the second conception alone will not guarantee the passage of time. Then, he shows how the first conception (and the combination of the two conceptions) leads to contradiction. In this way, he argued that time was not a real thing in the physical world. (Wikipedia)
